This project involved adding a third story to a small 1908 house in San Francisco. Architect-ed by Cary Bernstein, this is the new, 500sf third floor contains a Master Bedroom, Bathroom and Dressing Area with sweeping views of downtown San Francisco. By adding a glazed double-height extension to the front of the house, the former dark, recessed walkway was turned into a light and welcoming Stair Hall. The new facade presents a seamless reconciliation between the older, shingled cottage and the interests of an open and modern aesthetic.

At the main of the interior is the new stair to the third floor. The relationship of the stair and new double-height entry turns a traditionally stacked floor plan into an interconnected and playful circulation space.

Details such as open risers and a back-lit cabinet wall reinforce ideas of light and transparency developed in the new addition. In the Living Room, a new, Platonic and solid steel-clad fireplace balances the open and sculptural stair. The minimal palette of the interior helps emphasize the play of light throughout the house and draws attention to the dramatic views outside. The scale and variation of this new space transformed a petite cottage into a more varied and complex architecture

the new spaces and architectural vocabulary are clearly read as layers of time. The new, metal window-walls are clearly distinct from the punched wood openings of the older shell. The lighter appearance of the upper-story contrasts with the denser shingles below to create a bi-partite composition on the façade: the remaining solid walls of the cottage function as a base for the light container above.

located on a narrow street close to Hampstead Village and the Heath, and was comprised of three flats. The client was interested from the outset in an uncompromising contemporary design. His brief was to make the house into a modern home, full of light, and to ensure that there was a “ wow” factor on the raised ground and lower ground floor. The brief was also to transform the back of the house by extending it and forming a spatial connection between the house and the garden, with new, low-key landscaping to complement the overall design

The main external architectural intervention is to the back of the building, in the form of a new extension at lower ground floor, the roof of which, partially covered in structural glass, becomes a terrace which is reached from the raised ground floor. The rear extension has its own patio at lower level with a tall granite wall, part of which forms a waterfall from the garden above.

Internally, the spaces were redesigned extensively. The new lower ground floor was excavated further to allow even higher ceilings. It encompasses the kitchen, eating area and family living room. The raised ground, at entry level, contains the formal living and dining room, completely open t o each other and with a new, specially-cantilevered staircase connecting the two floors. The staircase is made up of a folded steel sheet connected to a steel beam within the wall. The steel plates are then clad in walnut, with a glass balustrade connected to the side.

Another important element in the room is a leather-covered side unit, which curves around at the top and continues across the ceiling. The unit contains a dumb waiter from the kitchen below, a bar, TV set, storage and incorporates lighting at the top.

The transformation of this small apartment has above all been strategic : Decompartmentalize the place so as to fit out an open plan and elude the demand of an extra room by conceiving in the center of the volume a suspended white cube which generates comic and disconcerting use situations.

This former artist studio characterized by a difference in height which shares the volume from a simple to a fake double height (3.70 m under ceiling in the main room) had been originally marqued by a awkward mezzanine under which one couldn’t be up and had, to get on it, to pass through a small doorway managed into a separating wall existing between the 2 volumes.

First step the plan is freed from all occurrences. The matter is to work on a 50 m² apartment in which the variety of orientations, volumes make possible unusual, uncommon living situations.

The bedroom, connoted as the archetype of privacy, intimacy, becomes an object of curiosity by transgressing his symbolic value, appearing like an anomaly. Open and visible from the entry, it stands for a huge inhabited furniture. Facing the dining room, it can be used as a “bumrest” or a bench.

The restraint of the demand of the client to fit out an independent bedroom has been turned into an advantage by putting this intermediary room in a central position, straddling the two floor levels, disconnected from the floor. The bedroom becomes an islet in the heart of the apartment around which you can turn, experimenting different moods : up / down, below / above, on / under and revealing unseemly uses.

Suspended right in the center of the apartment, leaving untouched the floor and the circulations around, it divides the space, reversing the perception of the atmosphere in the apartment by making private what is usually not : the living room.
